inspiring a Generation?!

Crippen's cartoon about the Olympics inspiring a generation

Crippen’s Inspiration cartoon

Is it just me or is there a blatant contradiction between what this government are actually doing and what they’re saying?!

Having cut just about everything that they could get their hands on, services, funding, etc., they then spend billions putting on this massive feel-good festival called the 2012 London Olympics.

You’ll remember that there’s been a lot of talk about the legacy of the games, hense the strapline – ‘Inspiring a Generation’. All very laudable but …

What about the local infra structure for these ‘inspired’ young wannabe olympic athletes? The truth is that there’s a funding crisis for local sports across the nation. There’s been a mass sell off municipal and school sports facilities, and sport has been chopped from the school curriculum left right and centre.

Legacy? Inspiring a Generation? As I see it, it’s all a facade!

    Yep. Rhetoric and paper-thin bullshit.

I don’t see it so much as a ‘blatant contradiction’ as a twisted version of “Dave in Wonderland”. In Dave’s wonderland or ‘Big Society’, everything would be part of a ‘free market economy’ – even young people having sex behind the bike shed a school will eventually be sponsored by some global condom company or the local Boots run Health Centre. The Tories want to inspire the next generation to work their behinds off for peanuts. The outcome will nevertheless be the same as Crippen describes.

  3. It is a massive contradiction, especially considering the percentage of kids who are actually cut out to become athletes, and the percentage of those who will find the support to actually do it anyway. I for one was rubbish at sport, and would never have been inspired by seeing the Olympics when I was a child. The current situation with people actually fighting to go to university and struggling to complete their degree only to find out there are no jobs in the field they specialize in is something he should pump money into, rather than the Olympics which only inspires athletes which very few of us will ever be anyway.
